Aleppo soap - handmade in the family business

The original Aleppo soap is traditionally made from olive oil and laurel oil in a family business.

First, the ingredients are mixed and cooked. The resulting mass is then spread out to dry. This is all done by hand and using traditional technology.

After drying, the soap is cut into pieces. Each piece weighs about 200g at this point. This weight reduces somewhat over time as the soap gains strength and loses liquid as it ages.

Each manufacturer has a stamp that is applied by hand to the finished soap bars. So every bar of soap is an individual piece of handicraft!

The stamp shows the manufacturer's name. The number of stars on the stamp indicates the ratio of olive to laurel oil. The higher the proportion of laurel oil, the more valuable the soap!

After the soap has dried and been stamped, it is stacked by hand and...

... is then - like a good wine - stored for a few months to mature. The dry, warm climate in Aleppo means that the soap can mature evenly and slowly. This makes it firmer and more comfortable to use!

Now the soap is ready for sale. It is valued as a natural product both in Syria itself and in many other countries around the world.
